Barbara Hughes
“Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure”
Barbara was a loving mum to Terry and Martyn grandma to Corrine, Mike, Stevie and George.
Born in 1929 the daughter of a Wilmslow Bespoke Tailor. Mum lived above the shop with her mum her dad, her grandpa and uncle Billy. Life was simple with gas lights and the radio and her bike, but they were only one of the few houses to have indoor bathing and toilet facilities. Mum as a young girl worked in the cellar where all the sewing took place. She learnt immense skills from her dad whom she adored. When needed she also worked at a Grocers.
Growing up through the Second World War years she Went to school in Macclesfield and became a qualified secretary. The Cellar by the way proved a popular venue in aerates and the family shared with other families.
After the war age 22 whilst working in the Manchester Cotton Institute she met Stanley George Hudson of the same age and they got married in 1951.
First living at the shop then moving into a council house in North Ward Road, Lindow Common, near Wilmslow, they had two children, Terry born in 1955 and Martyn born in 1958.
Dad decided to start a packaging company in Stockport with Richard Mossman. The company was called Hudson and Mossman Ltd and was successful. Mum worked in the business part time as a Secretary and Packer everyone had to turn their hand to the wheel. In the early days mum though was ostensibly a housewife and full-time mum, dad was the director of the company Uncle George Martin What is the company secretary and often we would find work being brought home so that we could all help in the packing of spatulas to hold your tongue down putting them in skillets cartons.
Mum had some trouble times in our life which she bought with great dignity. In Llanbedrog in Wales, she met Ernest Hughes who had lost his wife through illness prematurely. They soon moved to Devon and it’s fair to suggest that the years with Ernest were her happiest. Ernie died about 20 years ago and mum missed him terribly.
Now by his side she will be smiling again mum is an Angel at rest looking down with pride on her sons and her grandchildren and hopefully sided by all the dogs she has raised or adopted.
May she rest in peace.
Barbara sadly passed away on 10th January 2021 aged 91 years.
Her funeral took place on 25th January 2021 at Crewe Crematorium.
