Barbara Christian Hughes

“You are no more than a thought away”

Barbara was born in Wallasey on 11th May 1939.

Sister to Bob, Ben, Bill, Beryl and Richard. The family moved to Crewe in 1954.

Barbara attended Ludford street school for a short period of 6 months prior to starting work as a seamstress.

Barbara loved dancing and met her future husband and partner in life Malcolm “up the dance”
Barbara was a great dancer…Malcolm wasn’t.!!

She married Malcolm in April 1958 at St Michaels church Crewe and had their honeymoon in Llandudno where they returned many times.

They moved in with Malcolm’s mother at her home in Barnfield whilst saving up for their first house.

Their first house was in Ford Lane where all four children grew up, she was the best Mum who encouraged her children in everything they did.

Whilst her children were at school, Barbara worked part time at the Crewe Mayors office and at Porky Lees butchers.

In the final stages of her career she returned to full time work at Chester Barrie where she was invited to Saville Row to demonstrate the expertise of her craft of hand sewing, making clothes for Prince Charles and other members of the Royal family.

Malcolm and Barbara both retired and moved to their little cottage in Broad Street.

Barbara enjoyed many holidays with Malcolm including some great trips to America where she even flew over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter.

For her 80th birthday she travelled  from Sam Francisco to New York returning on the Queen Mary and during this trip she stood on the glass viewing platform on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower in Chicago.

Barbara continued to live independently in her lovely cottage with dignity and pride supported by family and very good neighbours.

Her funeral took place on Friday 22nd January at Crewe Crematorium.
