Carl became popular and well liked, indeed well loved, man in the 5 years since he made Crewe his home. His sudden passing at the age of just 53 was not expected, though his general health has not been good over his lifetime. It is only 4 months since we said goodbye to John, Carl’s step-father, with whom he had a good relationship. That loss has probably taken its toll.
So now the family must face another massive loss. We all want to pass our sympathies on to Trish, Carl’s mum, and his sister Deb and her partner Andy, and Jack, Carl’s nephew. But Carl was able to live the life he wanted right up until the day he died. No long lingering in hospital. He had been enjoying himself, as expressed in the opening song of the service: “Enjoy yourself”.
Carl was born and brought up in Crimond, near Peterhead in Scotland, later living in Peterhead itself. Although John, his step-father, was away working on the oilrigs for long periods, family life was happy and John was able to provide generously for his family. Thus, for example, they had some delightful holidays in places like Cuba, Mexico and Tenerife.
In his later teenage years Carl became a bit of an explorer and traveller. He loved being out and about, not tied down to any one place. At first he was interested in tracing his own father on the South Coast. Having satisfied his curiosity on this score, he hit the road again, living in a number of towns and cities such as Coventry and Liverpool, often depending on the goodwill of friends for a bed for the night. He would find bar work where he was stopping.
But he certainly didn’t lose touch with family, returning to Peterhead from time to time, especially for family occasions like Christmas or a Birthday.
In his mid-thirties Carl started to feel the need to settle down in one place. He formed a relationship with a lady called Tracy, and it wasn’t long before she was carrying their baby boy. Tragically, Tracy lost this baby. This was a very hard-to-bear blow for them. Tracy and Carl were soon to go their separate ways.
Ultimately Carl came to live in Crewe in 2018 only a few miles from his parents, who had already moved to the area from Scotland. Here he was very happy in his flat on Gresty Road, often glued to the TV watching favourite programmes such as programmes on politics like Questiontime.
Soon he had identified the pub which was to become his local – The Express – and there found friendship and goodwill. Those who knew Carl will confirm that he was very sociable, that he could make friends easily, and that he was kind to others and attracted kindness from others. He had the gift of banter and humour. He was sharp and clever with words.
Trish and Deb have received lovely messages from friends, not least the circle of friends he had created around him here in the past 5 years. People have gone out of their way to say nice things about him. He could even be nice to Everton fans!
Carl used to babysit/dogsit Dillon for his owner who lived nearby. Carl loved Dillon as much as Dillon loved Carl. Like the rest of you, Dillon will be missing him like crazy.
Carl as most knew was a keen Liverpool supporter. In this respect he followed in John’s footsteps. This would have been another source of social friendship. That aspect of his life was boldly represented on the service sheet, and the Liverpool theme song “You’ll never walk alone” was the exit music at the end of the service.
During the service those attending were treated to a Liverpool song sung by Hayley, who has regularly performed in The Express and elsewhere. She had become Carl’s friend. Her fantastic voice received a rapturous round of applause.
The ripples will continue from his life. The love in his heart and the happiness he has given to others and received from others are part of his legacy.
We can think of love as having an eternal dimension, as hundreds of love songs remind us.
Carl enjoyed his life. He found the world to be full of interest. He contributed positively to the life of those around him. May he now rest in peace.
My deepest condolences. Rest easy in peace Carl you beautiful soul, with loving protective arms around you.
