Daphne Jones

“Our treasured memories keep you near”

Daphne passed away in the care of Leighton Hospital  aged 87 years.  The much loved wife of the late David, loving Mum of Dianne and her husband John.  Devoted Nan of Megan Eleanor and Byron and Nannie to Skyla Mai, Layla Rose and Lola Kathleen. Loving sister to Sheila and Sister-in-law and Auntie.

Daphne is now at peace after her long life, reunited with Dave. That is a great comfort. It is also good to be able tosay that she was able to live at home until about a month ago supported by her loving daughter Dianne and her husband John. Her physical body might have been failing towards the end, but she knew she was surrounded by an avalanche of love. So Dave and Daphne now rest in peace together. Daphne had known all about the pain and sadness of loss when she lost her beloved husband Dave.

Born in Crewe in 1935 to Kate  (known as Kitty) and John Allcock, she had a younger sister Sheila. Following the passing of their parents, both girls were brought up by their Aunt Gladys – better known in the family as Auntie. Gladys was a widower  and had two children of her own, so times could be hard with 4 young children.

Daphne  attended Bedford Street Primary School where she passed her eleven plus and then continued on  to Nantwich Grammar School. She was a very intelligent young lady.

She went on to create her own family around her. She met Dave at the confirmation classes at St Michaels church. That might have made attending the class a bit more interesting. It  brought them both great joy and of course closer together. They married at St Michaels on the 17th of September 1955, with the Reception being held at the Cross Keys.

Daphne started work in the offices of County Clothes, better known as Chester Barrie, and as time moved on shestarted work at  Tottys Hall now known as Leighton Academy as a MDA in the Special Needs unit. She had lots of friends at the school, and was very well liked by all the ladies she worked with, the teachers, and most of all, the children. Friendships with the other MDA’s would often continue outside the school. Sometimes they would go out for a meal together, for example. But she had lots of other friends, often connected with her activities like Bowls, and together they might go out for a game of Bingo. (3 Bowls trophies were displayed during the funeral service.)

Going back to family life, at first the couple had lived in a house on Richard Moon Street. Later they had a short spell in Willaston and finally these last 56 years on Windsor Avenue.  While at Willaston in 1964 daughter Dianne came on the scene. Daphne and Dave loved and cherished her very much. Daphne had a love of parties –  probably originating from her young days when bright parties were held at home on Boxing Day.  People will remember the passing of the pillow case game that was full of clothes. When the music stopped you had to put your hand in the pillow case and what you took out you had to wear. When there were no more clothes left everyone had a laugh watching folks wearing all the various clothes. There were very many funny games played at these parties. Parties and fun times, especially the games, will be memorable for those attending.

So…Life should be fun! Meals out with Dave. Caravan holidays. Coach holidays. Bowling, and not forgetting happy family events not least the parties. Daphne always had good dress sense and loved getting her hair done. She was one for changing the colour. Maybe that is where Dianne gets it from as she is just the same for changing hair styles and colours. Dave would come home from work never knowing what colour or style Daphne’s hair would be.

Daphne and Dave had a good relationship together. They were soul mates and best friends. They had their ups and downs like anyone else but they worked well as a team. They always enjoyed a bit of banter – who was right or wrong – but did it all as a bit of a fun. They were funny to watch together but everyone knew they were very good together.

As a Mum,  Nan and Great Nanny Daphne will  be remembered with huge love. Thus, she was a loving caring Nan to Megan, Eleanor and Byron, and an equally loving and caring Great Nanny (known as “Nanny Jones”) to Skyla and Layla. Daphne’s third great grandchild, Lola Kathleen (Daphne’s second name was Kathleen) was born 3 days after Daphne had passed away – so it is sad that they never met.

Daphne’s home was filled with fun and joy when the youngsters visited. She would love to hear all about their school days and the various adventures they had had. When these family members think about love, affection and relationships, they will remember what they learned or picked up about these things from  Daphne. She believed that in the world to come there will be a glorious future. In token of their reunion Daphne and Dave’s ashes will be reunited. In the meanwhile she leaves you fragrant and uplifting memories. Rejoice in those memories, now absolutely priceless. Smile and chuckle as she would have smiled and chuckled. Be better people for having been in her company. Love has an eternal aspect to it. A pointer to God’s love which is eternal. And in the spiritual realms, through God’s love, those of you who love Daphne can hope to see her again.
Daphne’s funeral will take place at Crewe Crematorium Chapel on Thursday 26th January at 12.15pm
