********************************************************************************************************************************

David enjoyed his life. He was very athletic as a youngster, winning many trophies in Cheshire County Athletics.  He  kept himself fit walking around Crewe delivering mail for over 30 years. He might have been a Man United fan, but his heart was in Crewe. He was content to spend his days here, and contentment is a great quality to have.

He could make friends easily, he had the gift of conversation. And a loving family man – even if there was David’s way, and then there was David’s way.

So he enjoyed the camaraderie of being a Man United fan, the friendships as he had a  flutter on the horses or the dogs, drinks with friends, friendships though work, not forgetting family life.

In working life in the early days he would have enjoyed the contacts he had in Rolls Royce. And then for over 30 years there was the life of a Postie.  Dave was popular with work colleagues, and there are lots of opportunities on a postal round to have a chat. Perhaps more than that. There are privileged opportunities to bring a bit of cheer into others’ lives, even if you are also delivering a few overdue bills.

In later years he embarked on the life of an antique dealer. Another great chance to be sociable! He loved going to car boots, and table tops, and house clearances, buying stock to sell at Dagfields and later Applegates near Chester. There were great opportunities for banter with friends like Ann and Grant and Mick, bragging about the great buys and the prices he had got. There was a downside, of course. His house was stuffed with things he perhaps should not have bought.

All this was going on pretty well right up until his sad medical diagnosis just 6 weeks ago.

David was one of 5 children born to George and Doreen. Terry, Christopher, Susan and Peter, who was tragically lost at age 18, a sadness which lingered with him all his life. David had been particularly close to his mother. It is fitting that  his ashes are to be interred in the family grave in the cemetery, thus joining his parents and his brother.

David was father to 3 loving daughters, who have in turn given him 2 grandchildren – Grace and Anastasia. The daughters remember some great holidays as family. Holidays at places like Great Yarmouth. Even    cars that needed pushing to get started.

David had holidays further afield. Belgium, Australia, where Terry his brother lives. Cruises.

The three daughters have rallied to his assistance in recent times. They have reciprocated his generosity to them in the past. When they were younger they knew that he would be there for them if they needed his help.

They were certainly there for him as the end drew near. He would have been really chuffed that Beverley, Philippa and Georgina plus cousins were there beside him.  And not just close family, by the way. Many others rallied around at the end to give David the thumbs up. Perhaps a special word of thanks to Susan and Mick’s 5 daughters.  Grateful thanks to them all, as there are grateful thanks to Cypress Court Care Home who did him proud.

The human love that gives us such joy and fulfilment sadly gives us broken hearts at times like this. But also, at times like this, families can be brought together, and that must be a good thing.  Love is so much bigger than ourselves. It even has an eternal ring to it.

Be better people for the memories you have of David. And let him rest in peace in the company of past family members who have gone before. In the power of love which is stronger than death, those of you who love David will see him again.
