Edith Ann Littler

“Not just today, but a lifetime through, we will always treasure memories of you”  Edith passed away peacefully at Leighton hospital on 10th January, aged 94 years.  The Beloved Wife of the Late Alan, much loved Mum to Sandra, Audrey, Philip and Ian and Cherished Nanny and Great Nanny. Edith will be fondly remembered and missed by many.

Anne had been born into a happy loving family with strong Welsh connections in Brymbo near Wrexham. This set her on course for sharing love with her own future family and the world in general.

She was smart, gaining a scholarship to attend Grove Park Grammar School in Wrexham. Subsequently she spent several years in Nursing. This chimes with her caring nature – another angle on love. She was later to care for her mother and her sister in their times of need and decline, plus of course her own family members.

Her loving marriage to Alan in St Mary’s Church Brymbo on 2 June 1956 was to bring the couple 4 children – Sandra, Audrey, Philip, Ian – and 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Ann and Alan created memories of great holidays and fun days with their family, not forgetting the beloved dogs like Dinkie or Sam. There were days out, mainly on the beautiful North Wales coast.

Ann extended kindness and hospitality to others. Even if some family members recall  buttery tinned salmon sandwiches washed down with milky weak tea, she could readily put on a spread, apparently able to make a meal out of nothing.

Her life on the land, living with the rhythms of the seasons and the countryside, kept her close to the earth and to nature.  Ann understood the importance of hard graft. She was a worker!

Ann was a very creative person, and understood what it was to keep high standards. We can see her creativity in many ways. There were her skills in sewing and embroidery, her knitting and her crafts, flower arranging in church – particularly noteworthy were the flowers she did for each of her daughter’s weddings. She also created attractive gardens from which she would distribute cuttings and potted plants to the family.  There was also her sense of style in the way she dressed, and the way she kept an immaculate house.  Artistic creativity speaks to a dimension of life which, like love, is bigger than ourselves.

Allied to all the above were her unruffled level temperament, her personal integrity, her loyalty to friends over many years and her unwillingness to engage in gossip or tittle-tattle. Don’t let’s forget Ann’s courage and willingness to face challenge and change – as for example when the family bought a farm in Devon in 1976, and in the way she dealt with family deaths and her own cancer treatment.

She was grateful for what she had, and showed her appreciation by the care with which she used things. Hers was a life of contentment – not hankering after the bright lights or the next new thing.

Ann believed that in the life to come we will see loved ones again. She looked forward to reunion with Alan whom she lost 26 years ago. But in the meanwhile she leaves fragrant and uplifting memories. Rejoice in those memories, now absolutely priceless.

Sandra and her husband Paul have generously provided Ann’s home these past 3 and a half years, and shared their dog Molly with her.  But the last 4 months have required some further care, and so grateful thanks to BELONG for providing that.

So we leave Ann to rest in peace reunited with Alan.

Edith’s funeral will be held on Wednesday 1st February at 12:15pm at Crewe Crematorium.

Donations in memory of Edith will be gratefully received on behalf of Dementia UK.
