Elsie Hazel Leese, fondly known as Hazel throughout her life.
Hazel suffered two mini strokes five years ago and whilst in hospital she broke her
hip so although adaptations were made to the house, she made the sudden and
profound decision not to go home. She chose to go to Elm House instead and was
there for five years.
She was looked after by the carers and up until lockdown was regularly visited by
family, but she referred not to engage in any social interaction in the home and
normally stayed in the comfort of her own room.
It seems after losing her beloved husband Albert in 1991, she continued to miss and
mourn him and Hazel spent her final years wishing she and Albert could be reunited.
Hazel had just turned ninety on 12th August and had experienced the restrictions
caused by covid. Like many loved ones, Hazel wasn’t able to see family as much as
she would have liked, but she took everything in her stride.
Hazel was a formidable character at times, she negotiated her journey through life
with some bumps in the road, the fifth in a family of seven, Hazel and her siblings
lived through a world war, she clearly had to be strong from an early age.
Hazel had many different facets to her personality, she was often kind and caring but
could also be awkward and stubborn at times, but she witnessed so many changes
over the years and coped with grief so like many other people from her era, she
didn’t always wear her heart on her sleeve.
Hazel was born and bred in Crewe, her parents Lydia and Steven had seven
children and Hazel is survived by her dearest brother Cecil and his wife Joyce. She
was much loved by her late husband Albert and had two daughters, Lydia and Julie
and two sons in law Malcolm and Ray.
She had five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, she was an auntie and
great auntie and had friends over the years but sadly many have also passed away.

May she rest in peace.
