*************************************************************

During his lifetime, George was a loving husband to the late Sally and a much loved dad to Gary, Philip, Ian and the late Barbara, a dear father in law to Heather and Bob, a brother to Veronica, Joan and the late Brenda, Margaret, Ray and Les, he was a brother in law, an uncle and a cherished grandad to Sandra, Donna, Tony, Andrew, Christopher, Malcolm and Melissa, he was blessed with many great grandchildren and after Sally sadly died, he found happiness again with his second wife, the late Marjorie.  He was a loving companion to the late Noreen and latterly devoted to Jean.  George also had many good friends over the years.

George will be sadly missed and remembered with affection.  His bungalow was in Sandbach, but he spent the last twelve months living with Philip and on Sundays Heather stepped in to help care for him and she told me how he loved doing work searches or reading and in particular, books by his favourite authors, John Francome or Dick Francis especially when his mobility decreased.

George did have various health issues over the years yet that didn’t restrict him.  Just before Easter, he was admitted to hospital and on 2nd April, having seen Philip and Ian during the day, George passed away on Ward 1 of the South Cheshire Hospital.

As we look back on his life, it is impossible in the short time we have to cover ninety-six years in their entirety, many people may well say, he had a good innings but George no doubt would have said poppycock to that, he enjoyed life and had so much more to look forward to, with his family and with Jean.  He and Jean often went for meals to the Wishing Well, or to Ian and Heather’s for dinner.  They liked a game of bingo and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company.

So where did George’s story begin?  He was one of seven children born to Nellie and George Frederick Herring.  George arrived on 3rd December 1924 just six years after world war one, Stanley Baldwin was in office as Prime Minister under the reign of George V.  He had a contented childhood and loved to go pigeon racing with his dad a cabinet maker / French polisher by trade who had a shop on West Street.  Following in his dad’s footsteps, George became a joiner although like many other young men, he was a member of the heroic armed forces who served our country during World War Two.

George met and married his beloved first wife Sally and welcomed their four children into the world, but sadly Sally passed in her forties leaving George totally bereft.  He worked at Rolls Royce for many years making the exquisite mahogany dashboards and was there roughly around the same time as Philip and Ian.  Gary was a butcher at one time and Barbara ran the LMR club with Bob.

After leaving Rolls Royce, George became a joiner with Cheshire East until the age of sixty-five when he took a well earnt retirement.  Several years after Sally died, George found happiness again when he met Marjorie.  They married and enjoyed many happy times together like when they went dancing at the Crosville Club, going on holiday and their trips to the Wirral to see Marjorie’s family but sadly George was left on his own again when Marjorie died.

George loved to help Philip with his Night Owl Roadshow and Karaoke and he especially loved to sing, opening the show with songs like Be My Love by Mario Lanza so it was entirely fitting to enter the chapel to that very song.  He also loved to go to Oulton Park to watch Philip race his motorbike and was a keen fisherman spending many happy hours with Ian coarse fishing.

Fisherman’s Prayer

I pray that I may live to fish

Until my dying day.

And when it comes to my last cast,

I then most humbly pray:

When in the Lord’s great landing net

And peacefully asleep

That in His mercy I be judged

Big enough to keep
