Ian David Fearn was born on 11 th June 1962, a rather wonderful after thought, the fourth child to
Phyliss and Cyril. He was a gorgeous, blond, gentle little boy. One thing that always puzzled his
mum and dad was where the name Fen came from. Having had three children with names which
could be shortened, mum Fearn was determined it wouldn’t happen to her last child but that’s the
name his close friends called him, even to this day!
Ian was bright, gaining a place at the prestigious Reading Boys Grammar School following in the
steps of his eldest brother Stephen but having to attend school on Saturday mornings and the fact
they didn’t play football was a step too far as far as Ian was concerned and he opted to move to an
easier life at Stoneham Boys School in Tilehurst, also a grammar school but not so pressurised.
His friend Martin lived in the same street where Ian grew up and they became firm friends at an
early age which lasted until Ian took his last breath with Martin by his side.
An apprenticeship at British Gas followed Ian’s school years, this time following in his brother
Michael’s footsteps.
Ian was shy, cool, handsome, funny, an entertainer with a quick wit and wicked sense of humour,
especially after a few drinks. He was the font of all knowledge always an asset to have on one’s
team for pub quizzes. There was a caring and sensitive side to his nature, and he could also be
stubborn at times as many friends will agree.
Ian enjoyed life to the full. His interests included reading, following the flight path of planes and
shipping movements, fishing and apparently golf – well he tried, (his words). His main passion was
football. He supported Reading Football Club watching as many home and away matches as he
could over the last twenty-five years. He was also a very good footballer himself and could have
played at higher level.
In 1997, Ian left Reading to relocate to Crewe where he started his own heating and plumbing
business and was never out of work.
The White Lion became his second home, he even bought a house a few doors down! He then met
the love of his life Amanda, a person as beautiful on the inside as on the outside who entered his
world as a friend, but they fell in love and the chemistry between them was enviable.
She cared for and looked after him from the start of his illness. Ian and Amanda spent some love
times in Cornwall, a county Ian had loved since his childhood. They enjoyed many other holidays
and mini breaks away with friends and fell in love with Crete, even thinking of getting married there
but sadly his illness had other ideas.
Je loved cooking and was very good at it, his gravy was second to none and particularly appreciated
by his family especially with Sunday roasts.
He had a passion for music which he shared with his mates, going to see bands, concerts and tribute
artists. Genesis was his number one band after seeing a gig in Knebworth in 1978.
He enjoyed old black and white films and has watched every episode of Morse numerous times and
latterly Endeavour.
He had an appreciation of Art and once when he went to London with friends, they watched rugby
and he went to the National Art Gallery.

Ian was a very private and thoughtful man who could turn his hand to practically anything.

Then on 6 th April 2021, he and Amanda made a stunning bride and handsome groom and although
Ian wasn’t up to making a speech, his words “This is the happiest day of my life” spoke volumes and
brought tears to everyone’s eyes. Married life was all too short but so very precious.

May he rest in peace
