*************************************************************************************************************************************

Ivy was born in Locket Street Crewe on 29th October 1929.
She met Jacob (known as Jake) whilst on a trip to Beeston Castle, he was very forward and asked her out on a date! And despite having only just met him Ivy said yes. As they courted their feelings for one another deepened and they began to plan their wedding, they married in 1947 when Ivy was 18.

Their first home was in Station Street, Crewe and it was there that they welcomed David, Sandra and Kath into their family – they moved to Hope Street where they had Jake and their family was complete.

They had a number of house moves over the years including a time in Anglesey before returning to Crewe and finally settling in Rhoden Street.

She was always very proud of her family and with the arrival of grandchildren and great grandchildren Ivy loved nothing more than getting together with the family. She was always interested in what was going on in their lives.

In her younger days she would ride everywhere on her bike and the grandchildren would laugh when they saw her arriving at great speed down the street. Ivy continued to ride that bike even when her eyesight was compromised by cataracts – in the end Jake dismantled the bike to stop her from riding it, an act of kindness really but something Ivy never really forgave him for.

She would look after the children, but she was no easy push over – if they misbehaved, she would chase them with the mop. Holidays were spent together as a family and Ivy would give the children tubs of coins for the arcade machines.

Sandra told me that one day she was getting dressed in her bedroom when the door opened, thinking it was the boys messing around she pushed it back as hard as she could – not knowing that her mum was on the other side and the door bashed into her face resulting in Ivy having a black eye.

On one holiday with Jake, she went on the bumper boats on the lake. She couldn’t control the boat she was in and ended up spinning round and round screaming for it to stop, totally convinced that she was going to be sick!

Ivy was not a big drinker and never smoked but she did like a snowball at Christmas. Jake thought he would have a joke one year and laced her drink with Vodka – it had the desired effect, and his poor mum became a little tipsy, this was amusing to everyone else but I am sure Ivy had something to say about it when she sobered up!
Jake and Ivy were like all other couples. They had their ups and downs – there were good times and not so good times, but through it all they got along. Jake told me of times when they went to see their mum and dad and they would be bickering with each other, but deep down they loved each other and there was never any malice in their arguments.

When some of the grandchildren moved to Blackpool Ivy and Sue would would go and visit them, they would stay with her granddaughter Sally. They were great times which she thoroughly enjoyed.

In every life there is sadness and for Ivy the loss of her daughter Kath, her son David and three years ago her dearly loved husband meant that her life was a little darker.

Her health began to fail firstly with the loss of the sight in one eye following a cataract operation, this meant she couldn’t get out as much and for several years Ivy suffered from delirium and was looked after by her adopted son David and granddaughter Jackie. They were both there at the end. The family would like to thank them both for all they did for Ivy and the care and compassion they showed her in her final years.

May she rest in peace.
