Joan would have been eighty-five this coming September. Bborn in 1937, she had a
happy childhood living in Crewe with her parents Tom and Elsie and her two brothers
and two sisters. Living through the war years brought hardship to most people and
as the eldest of a fairly large family, Joan started work at Doodies Sewing Rooms
and contributed towards the housekeeping like many of her peers.
Joan and Vic metat the Odeon on West Street and were married in 1958. They
initially lived with Joan’s parents and despite Vic being stationed at Larkhill Garrison
in Wiltshire, he didn’t manage to get home much during that time. Eventually they
moved into a flat in Crewe then found a house in Ramsbottom Street where they
welcomed Maxine into the world. They moved to Stonely Avenue then to
Sharnbrook Drive where they lived for around forty years.
Joan worked as a telephonist for a period of time then in the early eighties, she
became a manageress of Cellar 5 and was ideally suited to a customer facing role.
She was popular but also knew how to deal with any awkward people or situations.
Joan eventually left there to open a lingerie shop called ‘Maxines’ on Nantwich Road
in Crewe until she retired.
Holidays were important to them and Vic fondly remembers they often visited his
parents and family in Whitehaven in Cumbria as well as going to Wales. Maxine
also remembers her cousin Simon used to sometimes accompany them on caravan
holidays down South. Vic recalled they had holidays in Spain and Morocco although
Joan wasn’t keen on flying but they also went to Malta with Maxine, Andy and
Francesca. They also visited Disneyland Paris together but with both
granddaughters.
In Joan’s younger days, it transpires that she was rather good at fishing and won the
LMR Sports Club women’s championship. She liked watching horseracing and loved
a drive out to Haydock and Bangor on Dee.
Was she a good cook – a resounding NO!
Keen gardener – another resounding NO!
Loved cleaning though and adored children – granddaughters being top of the
pecking order!
She liked doing crosswords and managed to still do them up until she went into
Station House.
