Joan Tagg, a strong independent lady, who was also fondly known as Taggy
especially to her NHS work colleagues.
Joan was born and bred in Lancashire and described as generous, loving,
hardworking and very sociable but her biggest achievement in life apart from her
career in the health service was her large family. She was a loving mum to Sharon,
Denise, Michael, Sue and Russell, and an ‘adopted’ daughter Deb who visited every
Thursday. They often enjoyed going out for a meal and had occasional outings to
the Imperial for a lager and black.
Joan was also a dear mother-in-law to Andrew, Tracey and would have been
officially a mother-in-law to Jo next year.
She was one of nine children, but she and her dear brother Tom were the last
surviving siblings. And, incredibly, Joan had fifty grandchildren, great grandchildren
and great great grandchildren. He love of animals, especially Alsatians earnt her the
nicknames Nana Champ or Nana Molly!
As well as being an auntie, great auntie and great great auntie to many, Joan had
plenty of good friends over the years, sadly some are no longer with us, but it was
lovely that some of her pals were at the ceremony, particularly from her days as a
nursing auxiliary at Leighton.
Born two years before the start of World War two, Joan lived with her parents
Lawrence and Bertha and her eight siblings in Ashton under Lyne. After leaving
school, Joan worked at Whiffins on an assembly line dealing with electrical elements
and then at Pattreiouex cigarette factory in Curzon Mill, Ashton which was
surrounded by green fields she liked to walk in.
She spent many evenings getting up to mischief with her friends, occasionally having
a ciggy and half a lager and black. Joan met and married her first husband and
together they had Sharon and Denise. After her marriage ended, Joan moved to
Dukinfield and married her second husband and went on to have their three children,
Michael, Sue and Russell. They had a busy local shop on the corner of King Street
in Dukinfield.
With the five children, they eventually moved to Crewe and Joan has remained in
Westminster Street for over fifty years. As the children got older, Joan focused on
her role as a nursing auxiliary, a career she started just as Leighton Hospital opened
and as former nurse myself, I have first-hand experience of the hands-on caring role
a good auxiliary had, the backbone of the wards. She worked on the urology ward,
and was totally patent focused. She showed new nurses the ropes and was asked
to consider training to become a qualified nurse, but she was happy to remain in her
role and declined.
She did become a union rep for Unison and had kept all her badges in a box. An
expert in all union matters, Joan attended many conferences over the years, and she
had an excellent memory for facts and figures.
Joan always enjoyed holidays in the sun, especially in Benidorm, she had even
booked and paid for next year. Her biggest passion was shopping.
She loved a bargain and was well known in all the charity shops and the Market.
And she was addicted to the shopping channels!
If she liked a blouse or a T shirt, Joan would very often buy one in every available
colour. She had even stocked up ready for 2022. She will be sadly missed by all
who had the pleasure of knowing her.
May she rest in peace.
Sleep Tight! You will be forever missed. Rest Easy Nana Molly. Mum will look after you up there. Until we meet again X
