****************************************************************************************************************************

Alan started his life in Carlisle, where he grew up alongside his three siblings, and was a bright and sociable kid, devouring books when he got home from school, and, as will come as no surprise, had loads of mates.  At the age of 15, he made the move to the Big Smoke where he began working on the trains, starting out cleaning carriages.  Suffice to say Alan hated London, and when he got the opportunity to move to Crewe, the hub of the railway industry at the time, he jumped at the chance.  Over the years Alan would work his way up from cleaning, to second man, to driver, driver manager, and finally head of operations and unknowingly at the time paved the way for his sons, who would very much follow in his footsteps.  A man’s man, and a proud railwayman at that, Alan’s way with people cemented him in the memories of staff and colleagues alike.  No matter the situation, Alan treated those in his charge with dignity and fairness. For many, he was “the best boss they ever had” and an inspiration for their own lives and careers.

If his dedication to work didn’t keep him busy enough, Alan was also a proud serviceman. Over his 30+ years in the Territorial Army, Alan worked his way up the ranks to Colour Sergeant, and, it will come as no surprise to hear – earnt the respect and friendship of his fellow recruits.  Alan’s military service will be further commemorated with the call of the Last Post a little later, made all the more poignant today, on Remembrance Day.

Alan had been living in lodgings in Crewe for about four years, when he saw a young lady on the steps of ‘Up The Junction’, and his life changed forever.  He even wrote a note in his railway diary for that day that read “Met Pat Smith – VN” (‘Very Nice’ according to Alan!) After 6 months courting, Alan popped the question, and on 17th November 1972, Alan and Pat became “Mr and Mrs Tebay”.

The love Pat and Alan shared was the stuff of movies.  You only had to look at them, let alone see them on the dancefloor after a few drinks, to see they were made for one another.  Together, the two welcomed 3 wonderful children into the world, Stuart, Amanda, and Andrew and Alan’s life took on new meaning… He was a dad.

“Dad was great man who touched so many people’s lives.  He lived life to the full and leaves one hell of a hole in our hearts.  He was our best mate, our Everything… Someone we could go to with all of life’s worries and would always get the best advice.  He really knew the solution to any problem.  We Couldn’t be prouder of him. RIP Dad and thank you for being the person who brought out the best in everyone.”

Alan was beyond proud of his kids, and as the family grew with the arrivals of Callum, Chloe, Brandon and Sasha,  Alan was over the moon.  Likewise, Alan was delighted when his kids found love, stating “Me three children have got the perfect partners”.  Alan welcomed Lee, Janette, and Niki into the fold with open arms… and arms full of drinks… and he loved them so much.

Alan was the life and soul of every party.  He lit up the room, and bathed everyone in his light.  A conversation with Alan was met with enthusiasm, genuine interest, and of course great humour and if there was music playing at the time so much the better!  Alan loved Status Quo, Queen, Tina Turner, and many a night would end in a sing song with Alan leading the charge!  He and Pat saw many amazing bands over the years, and indeed had many adventures!  In the words of Pat “we’ve seen some things!”.

The Tebay’s travelled the globe with holidays including their 25th anniversary to Hawaii and 40th to Goa.  At both, they renewed their wedding vows, still just as in love as ever.  For all their love of glob-trotting, Alan and his family were just as happy in rainy Britain; living it up at the Sausage and Cider Festival, or most recently camping Shrewsbury, and having a whale of a time.  Wherever they went, friends would be made, and words of love for Alan have come from all over the world.

Back at home Alan was quite happy spending time with his beloved Trisha and the one family member we have yet to mention… Bronson!  Alan adored Bronson, and time at home with Pat, Bronson, and a glass of Jameson’s, was just as treasured by Alan as all their adventures!

May he rest in peace.
