*************************************************************************************
Ken was born at 3 Oakland Ave Haslington on 12 May 1951 to Bill and
Annie Trigger. He was one of five children, with his brothers Denis, Vic
and Stewart and sister Shirley he grew up in a close family.
He attended Haslington Primary School and Bedford Street Senior
school in Crewe. On leaving school Ken choose a trade in woodwork
and attended pre-apprentice course at Crewe Technical College before
starting his trade at Pochin’s in Middlewich, where he worked in the
wood machine workshop, working mainly with hardwoods to produce
high quality fittings and fixtures for shops and hotels.
Ken was technically gifted and very highly thought off by his work mates.
He remained in his trade, working for various employers until he went to
work for Cornwallis packaging in Crewe as a machine operator,
producing high quality packaging for the food industry.
It was here that Ken met the love of his life Annie, they were inseparable
and their companionship soon developed into a deep love for one
another.
They enjoyed many a happy holiday in Scotland at Dunbar where Annie
came from, they both relished time spent at Belhaven beach near
Dunbar and would often visit the Scottish Seabird centre at North
Berwick and Bass Rock. Time was also spent on the west coast of
Scotland at the Maidens in Ayrshire, they had a mutual interest in wildlife
and were members of the RSPB.
Their constant companion was Buddie, a rescue Staffordshire terrier
who always was considered when booking holidays. Buddie was
adopted by Ken and Annie, and he very quickly became a member of
their family, as for years they fostered dogs in distress.
Ken and Annie spent time with Annie’s sons Anthony and Andrew for
breaks away in London, Ken would often say how they enjoyed
sightseeing and going to concerts whilst on their visits.
As you all know Ken was a keen cyclist and took inspiration from his
brother Vic, a prolific winner at 25 and 50mile time trials and a member
of North Shropshire Wheelers, which Ken joined along with his brother-
in-law Peter in the mid-1960s.
Ken successfully competed winning the club best all-rounder in 1970
with an average speed of 21mph, later, they joined Crewe Clarion
Wheelers and remain members to this day.
Ken along with Vic and Vic’s wife Cath would enter cycle race events all
over England and Wales and competed not only as solo riders but at
times racing on a tandem. There were times when Ken would partner
Cath on the tandem and at one 25mile event recorded a time of 1hour
and 10 seconds, Ken and Vic’s fastest time on the tandem was 55 mins
for 25 miles.
Ken, Vic and Cath were in fact a cycling family and for years they would
combine holidays with cycling race events. They went to the Isle of Man,
Isle of Wight and Guernsey frequently.
However along with the successes of holiday trips there were occasional
problems.
One time whilst on Guernsey, their hotel was not far from the starting
point of the race, just a short distance along the promenade. It was
Easter time, and the tides were quite high with waves coming over the
wall. Although Vic and Cath had been warned not to go along the prom
they thought they could get the timing right which they did! Ken was not
so lucky and reached a point just at the same time as a giant wave hit
the breakwater, Ken didn’t hear Vic and Cath shouting warnings so all
they could do is watch as a massive wave hit the breakwater. Ken then
realising his fate peddled furiously to minimise the effect, but the wave
rained down on him soaking him. Nevertheless, Ken completed the
10mile event in a time of 28mins-24sec.
Ken was also a keen darts and dominoes player and represented his
local pub the Hop Pole playing for them in annual National competitions
at Bridlington.
Recently he took an interest in trike racing inspired by Vic, he became
quite successful and in 2018 won all three categories at the north west
tricycle association 10 mile in Cumbria as event winner, fastest on
handicap and fastest vet.
In 2019 Ken was awarded second place by the national tricycle
association time trial league with 194 points Kens last Trike race was 22
May this year at Stafford. He was looking forward to the next event with
Vic on June 5th but sadly he didn’t make this .
Ken had no children of his own, but he was fond of all his nieces and
nephews and Annie’s boys as they were of him. He will be sadly missed
by all his family and all of his mates.
May He Rest in Peace
