***************************************************************************************************************************
The youngest of five children born to Geoff and Lilian Downing, Mark had a very
happy childhood, surrounded by family and friends. He was particularly close to his
mother.
His sister Ann remembers how Mark enjoyed many family holidays as a teenager,
and the whole family have happy memories of Mark making them laugh, usually
unintentionally!
Mark left Shavington High School and joined British Rail, as an Apprentice
Signalman and he worked in local Signal Boxes until his health deteriorated.
During his later teenage years and early twenties, Mark shared a love of wrestling
with his nephew, Liam.
He was also keen on sport and enjoyed playing table tennis with his nephew Steve
and it seems Mark was a ‘better than average’ player but he really found his niche
with snooker as he became an accomplished pool and snooker player. He was a
member of Shavington Club and, subsequently The Pioneers’ Club, winning many
league titles.
During Mark’s late teens and early twenties, he was an avid Michael Jackson fan.
Mark sadly had kidney problems for many years. After his first transplant, he
became a porter at Leighton hospital and he is remembered fondly as a valued
member of staff with a positive attitude, and dry sense of humour.
Mark met his wife Alison in 1995 after he had moved into Parkstone Drive in
Coppenhall and had been blessed with twenty years of married life.
On days off, they were up with the lark to go out in the car. They often visited
Alison’s sister Yvonne in Somerset and Reading and occasionally to Folkestone.
The one and only time they went abroad was for their honeymoon in Nerja. Spain.
Alison described it as magical, exploring, enjoying beautiful scenery and paddling in
the sea but with so many beautiful places to visit on our own doorstep, they would
literally stick a pin in a map of Wales! before they left.
It was a case of whatever the day brought; they were in it together. Mark was a
lovely person, incredibly considerate and extremely brave, he will be very much
missed.
May he rest in peace.
You are in my thoughts and prayers. In time try and remember the love that was and not the pain of loss. I shall remember Mark with kind affection. Love Glynis xx
