Michael Edge
Date passed: 5th of June 2023
Funeral date: 4th of July 2023
“A daily thought, a silent tear, a constant wish that you were here.”
Michael passed away at home on the 5th June aged 71 years. Michael will be so sadly missed by all his family and friends.
Mick was a Crewite, born and bred. He was a mate to many, both male and female. He was a people person, someone good with the banter.
He had attended to St Mary’s RC school in Crewe and then went on to Blessed John Sherd, which later became Sir Thomas More. He used to play football in his younger days for Crewe Albion and other teams. His working life started at Rolls Royce. He then went on to Haslington cheese factory. Finally he was at Gist.
Crewe has lost a key player in the community. His popularity was attested by the numbers attending the funeral – about 200.
Manchester United have lost a loyal fan. Mick’s loyalty was attested by the entry music “Glory Glory Man United” and the numerous red shirts folks were wearing.
The loss is hard for everyone but particularly for Mick’s family, particularly his daughter Sue and her husband Joe, his sisters Maggie and Kate, his grandchildren Lily, Lila and Courtney, and adopted grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Jim, Mick’s best mate, deserves a mention. By the way, whilst playing football as a young man Mick introduced his team mate Stan to his sister Kate. 50 years later they are still together!
You can see Mick in his daughter and grandchildren – most obviously perhaps in their facial features. And here’s an amazing thing! As it happens, Sue is carrying another of Mick’s grandchildren. She has a scan of the baby in the womb and you can already see the baby has Mick’s face! The only thing the baby is missing is Mick’s trilby hat.
You can also see Mick in family warmth and friendliness. Mick has probably been closest to Lily, the eldest grandchild who is 11. She has super memories of her granddad who has been as much a dad as a granddad to her. She has plenty of happy memories – for example, the way he would let her plait his hair, or the way he would talk to her and take great interest in what she was up to.
As a tribute Lily and her cousin Shelby sang a song that Mick had taught them.
Everyone remembers a popular, helpful and approachable face who befriended all and who could talk to anybody. Mick liked companionship – particularly pub-type companionship. It was probably the companionship that meant more to him than the ale.
Pubs are so much more than places where you can get a drink, or empty your wallet or dent your credit card limit. You are part of a social enterprise. You help build community.
There is a message here for all of us. Many of us have opportunities to befriend, to support, to encourage – whether or not you are in a pub. Follow Mick’s lead. Be that friendly face.
Mick’s philosophy was that life was there to be enjoyed, and he worked hard to make it happen like that. He has been able to live that life until the day he died – which is a very positive thing to be able to say. In fact, his last night was a really happy one.
He does not want you to be sadder than is inevitable given your love for him. The love you shared with him has an eternal quality to it – as a million love songs will tell you. Today and in the future, he wants you to love life and people like he did. To love and cherish family members. To be a friend and good neighbour to others.
The memories are now precious beyond price.
Many people came up during the service to place roses on the coffin while listening to “The ballad of Jesse James”. At the end a standing ovation was given to Mick, and the final music item was “Changes” which Mick and Sue used to sing as a Karaoke duo.
Michaels funeral will take place on Tuesday 4th July at Crewe Crematorium Chapel at 10.45am
