**********************************************************************************
Norma was Crewe born and bred. She spent nearly all her life here, or not far away in Winterley, apart from a couple of years in Suffolk. She was content to call this place home. She lost her husband at the tragically early age of 36. Jackie, her daughter, has been especially close to her mum. Her time with Derrick has been a time of great joy for them both these past 29 years. Well done Derrick! You have done her proud, but remember she’ll still be watching you, so don’t step out of line.
They have had great times together. Think of all the cruises they went on. Think of all the coach trips they went on to Scotland or Cornwall. Derrick doing the driving while Norma was the hostess with the mostest serving tea or coffee to the passengers. Quite a team they were really.
All this tells you something about the sort of person Norma was. Feisty, friendly, able to talk to anyone, making the most of opportunities that came her way and bringing a bit of cheer at the same time, even using some colourful language. She had kindness in her heart. One group of people from Canada whom Norma and Derrick met on a cruise have remained friends. They have visited here in Crewe.
And while we are thinking about the sort of person Norma was, I think it was significant that Norma did taxi driving for many years. Not afraid of people. Able to chat to anyone. Picture her telling visitors something about the places they were passing as she drove them. Who knows? Perhaps there are people living in Crewe today who were so taken with feisty friendly Norma that they decided to settle here.
Norma had an artistic streak. She had an eye for what was attractive. She had an ear for what was musical. You can see artistry in the way she decorated her bungalow, and some of the ornamental displays there. You can see it in her appreciation of beautiful places.
Beautiful things take us out of ourselves. We find ourselves part of something bigger, something which celebrates the human spirit, something which stirs our souls. The world is a beautiful wonderful place. We savour it, and celebrate it. If we are so minded we are inspired with awe and wonder. Some things are precious beyond words. And Norma made the most of her 79 years minus 2 days on earth. She would want us to do the same.
But I guess that for Norma family trumped everything. Her devotion was to family. The close relationship with her daughter Jackie. Her love for her two grandsons, Benn and Steve. The warmth between her and Derrick.
She and Derrick had contentment and gratitude in their hearts, something very precious, and much of that came from life together. Love in families is pretty high on our list of good things in life. Happy family life sets us up to face the world.
But now close family members are left bereft. She had been their ROCK. They need your kindness and gentleness. But they hope to see her again. I believe they will. But in the meanwhile she is with them in all the memories and in all the special meaningful places they shared.
All of you can learn from Norma’s life, and be better people for having known her. Celebrate your lives as she celebrated hers.
