*******************************************************************************************************************************
Pam was a beloved wife to Michael, a devoted mum to Michelle, Stephen and Paul,
devoted nana to David and Simon, sister to the late Beverley, sister in law, auntie,
friend and neighbour.
Pam was born in Matlock on 9th October 1940 to parents Leonard and Doris Fox and
was a baby sister for Beverley.
After leaving Ernest Bailey Grammar School, Pam worked at the County Council in
Derby and Matlock.
Pam loved music and dancing and even went to see the Beatles before she and
Michael got married. They declared their lasting vows on 10 th July 1965. They
moved to Barnsley so Michael could easily commute to Sheffield.
Pam became a full time housewife and mum once Michelle was born followed by
Stephen and then Paul.
As the children got a little older, Pam worked part time in the accounts department at
Crewe and Alsager College but was always home when the children arrived home
from school.
They often went to Tenby in South Wales and Pam used to enjoy walking up to the
statue of Prince Albert on the cliff top. Pam and Michael also had a memorable
holiday in Venice with Stephen and Paul followed by a week at a lakeside resort in
Lake Garda. The family had prepared their own tributes in honour of Pam.
Michelle shared lovely memories of her mum including the story about when she was
younger, and her hair was very long. Her mum liked to put rollers in it but the pins
were painful when she secured them in her head. She insisted that Michelle had to
“suffer if she wanted to be beautiful!” She didn’t realise Michelle would later become
a hairdresser and Pam would be the one receiving the beauty treatment!
She loved her children and grandchildren and her shopping.
Stephen said his mother always liked walking with her dogs Toby and Tim and
looking after other people’s dogs, such as Sam and Pip the dogs next door. She
liked cooking and visiting country houses and loved visiting Matlock where she grew
up. She loved reading and having a cup of tea with lots of sugar. Her favourite
author was Agatha Christie and she also liked Danielle steel and Peter Robinson.
She also liked the James Herriot books and the television series All Creatures Great
and Small. She always helped neighbours near her when they were in need.
Paul had several poems to recite and his happiest memories included the many
hours they spent together as she patiently taught him to read from the set of
Ladybird reading scheme books that she bought. She always encouraged her
children to read and had a great love for children’s books and childhood in general.
As a girl she listened excitedly to the BBC Children’s hour on the radio with its serials
Dick Barton: Special Agent and Noel Streafeild’s Ballet Shoes. She often imitated,
the voice of the Toytown character Larry the Lamb.
She was determined that her children should have a happy childhood; a goal which
she succeeded in achieving.
Pam was also extremely caring, always dedicated to the care of others including her
parents, grandchildren and neighbours.
Christmas was always a special time for her, she made a great effort in all the
preparations from buying presents and decorating the tree to preparing and cooking
the Christmas dinner. Mum made the Christmases the enjoyable and happy family
occasions that they always were.
She wrote her own poem enitled Feathers, about snow, age 8, in 1948.
Little white feathers filling the air,
Little white feathers what came you there?
We came from the cloud birds,
Sailing so high there, shaking their white
Wings up in the sky.
Little white feathers how swift you go,
Little white snowflakes
I love you so.
[Pamela Fox 27/12/1948]
She enjoyed walks in the countryside, chatting to everyone she met and loved nature
in general. She enjoyed the changing seasons of each year.
She had a brilliant sense of humour and as well as being a mum Paul said she was
also his friend.
Pam’s cherished grandchildren David and Simon were born in 1988 and 1990. When
looking after David she was unaccustomed to pampers nappies and attempted to put
the nappy on backwards. She looked after David for some time in the afternoons
when Michelle worked as a hairdresser.
May she rest in peace.
