Peter Ewart Jones

"Memories are something no-one can steal."

Date passed: 20th of May 2022

Funeral date: 8th of June 2022

“Memories are something no-one can steal.”

Peter passed away at home with loving family by his side on 20th May, aged 92 years.

Peter Ewart Jones, a devoted husband to the late Marion, a cherished dad to Diane, Clive, Barry and Mark, dear father-in-law to Lindsay, Julie and Debbie and a loving grandad to Adam, Sally, Megan, Andrew and Beth.  He had an older brother, the late William who emigrated to Australia and was a brother-in-law, uncle to many including Kelly and Alan in Australia and he and Marian had some good friends and neighbours over the years.

Peter was a gentle gentleman, quietly present and unassuming, he always wore a trilby and tipped his hat to ladies of his generation, and he never liked to be seen without his collar and tie.

Peter and Marion were the solid foundation on which their close family was built, happily married for over sixty-eight years, their love never faltered, they were truly devoted to one another, inseparable, and the only time they were ever apart was when Marion was in hospital, and he never really adjusted to life without her.

Remembering Peter

Peter was the youngest of two boys and welcomed into the world by his parents William Ewart and Clara Jones on 13th January 1930 in Southsea, a seaside resort in Portsmouth.  His dad William was in the navy and Clara was a nurse.

The family moved to Shotton in Deeside at some point during the war and then to Crewe because of family ties to the area.  Peter never really chatted about his early years but after leaving school, he got an apprenticeship at the works and then moved to the tool room at Rolls Royce for the rest of his working life.

He remembered the day Rolls Royce was bombed, he was with a pal on West Street and the plane seemed to almost brush past their heads.

When he first met Marion, they were both members of the old Wedgewood Methodist Chapel in Heath Street and spent much of their courting in the social hub of the chapel.

Married on 8th September 1951, they Initially they lived with Peter’s mum and dad at 155 Middlewich Street but after the arrival of their daughter Diane, they acquired a council house in Capesthorne Road.

As their other children arrived, Peter and Marion always made sure they had everything they could afford to give them; they would never go into debt and lived within their means

The family remember the fun filled holidays camping in Cornwall with their mum’s brother, Peter and his family and they made the long journey in an old Bedford Van.

Eventually Barry joined the army, Clive married, Diane moved to Manchester to pursue a nursing career and Mark stayed at home.  After Diane returned to Crewe with Adam and Sally, they initially lived with Peter and Marion until Diane bought a house in Myrtle Street with her mum and dad.  They had their own front room and a shared kitchen.  Adam remembers the lovely times they had playing card games like Happy Families and being taught how to play Solitaire.

He spoke of his grandad being very patient, and although he rarely engaged in long conversations, when asked for advice, he would thoughtfully come out with a pearl of wisdom.

He worked incredibly hard for six days of the week but looked forward to packing up the car on a Sunday to enjoy a well-earned day out with Marion and the family.

The family remember how he remained stoic, reassuring and protective without having to say a word.

He was much respected by all of his colleagues and proud to have been the Branch Secretary of the union for twenty-four years.  Totally dedicated, he was smartly dressed and every Friday evening around 5pm except when away on holiday, he never failed to go down to the Branch Office to pay subscriptions and do the necessary admin.

He and Marion enjoyed many coach trips as they got older visiting places like Germany.  They flew to Jersey and the Isle of Man and had many days out with Diane in her Metro; to Llandudno and enjoying fish and chips from Carl’s chippy in Prestatyn.

Such lovely memories to remind the family how special Peter was and how he and Marion made the perfect combination.

A service to celebrate Peter’s life will be held at the Crematorium Chapel, Crewe on Wednesday 8th June at 12.15pm, followed by cremation.

Donations in memory of Peter will be gratefully received on behalf of British Heart Foundation.
