It was a magnificent and fitting tribute to Raymond to have the McGrath truck as part
of the cortege in Raymond’s honour.
Raymond was just sixty-one years young with so many more hopes and dreams yet
to fulfil especially with his family. He was taken long before his family were ready to
say goodbye.
Raymond was a beloved son to Maria and the late John, a doting dad to two
fabulous children; Natalie or chuck egg as he lovingly called her. As a little un, he
would push her for miles in her buggy with their dog Sheba and being his first born,
Natalie may well have been the apple of his eye but at the age of seven in the school
hols, Liam travelled with his dad around Europe in the lorry so who got the better
deal? Liam was called Nugget as he got older and when both kids were together, he
had some choice nicknames!
Raymond was also a grandad – to Pablo the dog, he constantly used to wind the
poor thing up so his ‘grand dog’ wasn’t actually Raymond’s biggest fan! But he was
a much-loved brother to Yvonne, Nigel and Nuala, a brother-in-law, uncle and good
friend to many.
He clearly had the benefit of a good upbringing, he liked to be smartly dressed with
his shirt tucked in, he usually had a neat crease in his jeans and normally had a
handkerchief in his pocket which he regularly used to wipe Natalie’s face when she
was little. He liked nice aftershave and a passion for great shoes, with metal tips to
make a ‘clip cloppy’ sound.
Raymond had a happy go lucky, carefree nature, he loved to meet old friends, as
long as they bought a round! and he was convinced he was incredibly funny; people
did laugh but were they laughing at his jokes or at him?
Remembering Raymond
Raymond was born in Wrenbury on 25 th March 1960 and attended St Mary’s and
Blessed John Sherd schools. His parents were originally from Ireland and when
John got a job in England, Maria moved here with him but maintained their strong
Irish roots and regularly went back home to visit family. Raymond enjoyed many
happy hours in the fields with granddad Woods and loved seeing grannie Woods.
Coming from a hardworking family, he proudly used to say his first job was as a
paperboy for Downings newsagents. When he left school, he worked at CNC
Supermarket then joined the Wellcome Foundation as a porter when he was
seventeen and continued there for over twenty years.
Eventually Raymond became a long-distance lorry driver for various companies in
England and Ireland, he travelled around Europe, made many lasting friendships and
the companies he worked for were very good to him.
When Raymond met and married Janice, they initially lived in a flat in Brooklyn
Street then moved to a house on the same street.

They welcomed their two children into the world; Natalie arrived in 1988 followed by
Liam in 1989. They had many fabulous holidays with Nigel and Honour and Jeff and
Lynn. Before he suffered with a bad back and hip, Raymond enjoyed a game of golf
and football but got too old and creaky to continue running around the pitch kicking a
ball.
For many years, Raymond and the whole family looked forward to a few pints with
his dad on Christmas Day and Boxing Day at the Aslef Club. Apparently he was a
disco dancing champion back in the day!
And of course, he liked a drink, well in fact, he enjoyed a gallon and a half of ale
every time he went out, normally to Nantwich Road Club or South Street Snooker
Club and he was incredibly tight with his money! He liked to make sure everyone
paid their dues, and always made a note of whose round it was. On a beer mat he
would mark down 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. and put a name against each one and if rounds
were still outstanding, the beer mat would come back out at the start of the next
session to carry on where they left off.
Raymond took his retirement last year after forty years or so of hard graft and
ironically, he ended up in the same flat he was in thirty years before but this time with
his beloved dog Tilly who he regularly walked for miles, she meant the world to him.

May he rest in peace.

Today, 5th December 2023, I just heard the sad news about Ray, over 2 years after his passing. I was so shocked and also sad that I wasn’t at his funeral to pay my respects. I worked with Ray at Wellcome, as his manager for a few years. As stated in this wonderful tribute above, Ray was a hard worker, he was always very polite and very well presented, in work and out. RIP Ray. Paul Taylor
