Robert Hulson

Although we cannot see you, you are not that far away. You are in our thoughts and memories today and everyday.

Although we cannot see you, you are not that far away. You are in our thoughts and memories today and everyday.

Robert (Rob) was born in Burslem on 7th March 1953. He was the youngest of 4 children, his sisters Audrey and Anita as well as his late brother Gordon.  A devoted husband to Lynda, father to Sam and Lydia and grandfather to Samuel and Molly sadly taken from us too early. He passed away at home in the loving arms of his family after a brave fight against cancer. The quickness of the disease took us all by surprise. He was an inspirational and charismatic teacher who touched and influenced the lives of so many. Robert was a committed family man immensely proud of his two children and their spouses, Chris and Yuvi. He was very proud of all their achievements and his two beautiful grandchildren. His greatest pleasure was to spend time with his family. Robert was a very gentle unassuming person with a wicked sense of humour. He was always ready to listen and never judged. Aside from his family, Rob loved good food, red wine, brown wine and music! Rob was in fact a very accomplished guitarist. He was a devoted Liverpool season ticket holder with his son Sam. He loved being outdoors and walking with his beloved dog Charlie. In retirement, he found his happy place at Cringoed, Llanbrynmair in mid Wales where so many special family memories were made and they will live on in all our hearts forever.

Rob will be deeply missed not only by his  family but also by the wealth of friends and friendships he had made over the 67 years of his life.

God Bless

I only met Rob a few times but he certainly had a strong presence and was a genuine man. I always heard such nice things from his son, Sam too. It was certainly clear how much he adored his family and his strength was incredible.

I truly believe your strength will live on Rob!
Walk on with hope in your heart and know that your family and friends will always have you dear in their hearts.

Rob was my best mate. I have known him for 35 years without a cross word between us.
Rob liked the simple things in life like ,Good food, good company,Good wine(mainly red) good scenery and good conversation. He was at his happiest with his growing family around him.
He was generous and material things meant little to him. He was( and that word is so difficult to write) so kind and generous. A great listener who would not judge.
I have so many happy memories of Rob. He was a great story teller and he was in many of them. You would not hear a bad word spoken about Rob.
He found his little piece if France he so fondly spoke about, closer to home in Wales where he spent so much time with the dog Charlie and his family of whom he was so justifiably proud.
He has left such a legacy for so many people and he taught me so much.
To my children Kate,Jess and Joe he was simply just “Uncle Rob”. To me he was my very good friend and I miss him so much.
Good bye Rob. I will love you forever.

    Hello Rob,
I’m sure like all your family at this time are struggling to believe you have left us. On behalf of Sue Louise and myself we will forever be thankful for your friendship. If I was feeling down or there were issues getting to me I just knew your positive outlook would be there to drive me forward.
Your passion for “ Cringoed” will always remain in my thoughts, your enthusiasm for encouraging others to come here and the energy you showed in caring for the surroundings of your caravan will forever be at the forefront of my memories. Truly you showed us and others this was a “Happy Place” for all who visit “Cringoed”
As time went by I truly believed you were a friend and someone I could seek advice as well as having a chat about cars or football.
When Louise was having issues at school your response was so caring for which Louise was so appreciative.
To Lynda and all your family, Thankyou for being part of Cringoed family, and hope to see you soon.

    ❤️RIP Rob Hulson❤️

When Rob worked at St. Martin’s we often shared music. The more obscure the better with Rob!

Nitin Sawney-Beyond Skin springs to mind! ‘The Homelands’ and ‘The Conference’ tracks were a talking point. Also Glasvegas with their Glaswegian accent and dialect needed a bit of translation!
Also, I can’t not think of Rob when I hear anything by Sting or The Police.

Also during his time at St. Martin’s I landed the task of choosing his Secret Santa Present. I had to go for something wicked to match his sense of humour. I’m glad I did as he chuckled when he opened it! An ‘I Can’t Read This Crap’ stamp set to help him with his marking. I don’t know if he ever used it!❤️

He was a funny, kind and special.
The world has lost a good man!
❤️Love to Lynda & Family at this difficult time of loss.❤️

You were a fantastic teacher and I’m so proud to say I had the privilege of having you teach me in my junior years at St Martins.
It was quite a while ago now but only feels like yesterday.
You had the best dry sense of humour, was down to earth, genuine and told the best stories!
I’ll always remember your talented guitar playing and you getting the class to sing: Oasis – half the world away.
It took a few goes for us to get those lyrics right but with your patience and persistence, we perfected it thanks to you.

Rob- You gave our family so many fabulous experiences and we have so many fond memories to remember you by. Holidays in France will always be my favourites- although I’m not sure how many years of you trying it took before I finally dropped my fear of men and spoke to you! Many a year of you chuckling away as I took the longest routes to places to avoid walking near you! Montalivet, night markets, bottled French beer, camping, Robbie Williams, Sting and The Police and of course your hilarious stories. But France aside, you have been the best of friends to my Dad, provided an amazing ‘second home and family’ for my Mum and will always be remembered as Joe’s beloved ‘Uncle Bob’. To one of Eastern Road’s finest- You’ll be so very missed! My heart goes out to Lynda, Sam, Lyds and their families…not forgetting Charlie! I hope you’re up there enjoying beach walks with Stan and jamming away to The Police and my frequent request, Clapton’s Tears in Heaven! ❤️

You were the coolest Dad a child could wish for, I know how much Sam loved you and vise versa! A true gent and although you probably never forgave me for rocking up to your house that evening asking you to tell the police that I had been drinking at yours after flipping my corsa on Eastern road, I still have immense respect for you as a human and as a man.
You and Lynda raised your family extremely well and no doubt led the life that you wanted to live. Proud to have known you and am reflecting on BBQ’s in your garden on a willaston summers evening. Go with peace, you will be truly missed. X

Robert has been a dear and valued friend for 45 years and we are devastated by his death. We have spent happy family holidays together (although the dodgy mussels in France are memorable for all the wrong reasons), and continued to to meet regularly for all that time, spending days in Shropshire and Cheshire walking, eating, drinking and mostly talking-how can two people talk for so long about football?
Robert was a gifted and inspirational teacher who did it his way and gave so many children an amazing education.
Robert was a devoted family man and our hearts go out to Lynda, Sam, Lydia and his much loved growing family-not forgetting his best mate Charlie.
We are lucky to have our last memories of Robert at his ‘little piece of heaven’ at Cringoed and we pray that you have found another little piece of heaven to rest.

You were always really good at doing up your house and were always very busy doing something new. You had many a nice car my favourite was the black golf. My thoughts and prayers are with your loved ones at this sad time, I can only imagine the heartache they must feel. I wanted to offer you some comfort of what a wonderful man he was, he touched the lives of so many. It has been 17 years since he first taught me, and I still look back at those times with so many fond memories of him, without him I don’t think I’d be the person I am today. His dry sense of humour made teaching fun, I always remember him banging his head against the whiteboard when someone answered incorrectly and making all the class laugh (to this day I still tell everyone about that). His charisma when he read Macbeth and pretended to be one of the witches. Playing guess the song he was playing on guitar. Spending hours upon hours with the class practising handwriting, he always had such beautiful handwriting. But not only that, he encouraged me more than he probably ever knew, his wise words have stuck with me my whole life. Such a happy, kind and inspiring soul. Rest In Peace Rob, you will forever be in my thoughts.

    Rob,

It is with a heavy heavy heart I find myself writing this message. You became my father in law over recent years but we went back much further than that. You were always so popular around the village and you were so accommodating to us all. You never judged which made you so approachable by all. In more recent times we were able to enjoy Nantwich town matches together as well as our bitter sweet Liverpool / Manchester united rivalries

I remember building myself up to ask for your daughters hand in marriage and when we had that conversation on that sunny day in New Quay, Your reply was simple and effortless much like your character… ” Yes that would be great, im really pleased! Shall we have Chips for lunch” Summed you up perfectly. I read somewhere recently your comments on the words love and loving. Love isn’t something you say, its something you show and you touched us all with that every day of your life.

Although Lydia and I’s wedding day will never be the same without you, I take great comfort knowing we will marry in one of your favourite locations and I have no doubt you will be wandering the surrounding woods in spirit.

You have my word that your daughter, granddaughter and further family will always be looked after by me in the way you would have wanted… Not saying love but showing love every day.

    Rest easy Rob

We felt very lucky to meet Lynda and Rob about 10 years ago.
It was easy to bind with Rob because he was a generous and curious man. He had his own ways and had the confidence you gain with experience. But he would also immediately make young people like my son and my daughters feel at ease and honestly listened to.
They all remember him as a cheerful and happy man.
Far from lecturing, he was more sharing his experience than teaching it. You could have a deep conversation with Rob about anything. And thanks to his great sense of humour, you wouldn’t even realise he had reached deep into to you.
    Nicolas immediately loved him.
Rob’s awareness to simple and immediate pleasures was a delight, his family (you could tell how much he loved you), friends, good wine and food, music, beautiful landscapes in France or Wales (he’s made his little paradise there), walking his dog (Stan and then Charlie). He didn’t need to go far to be happy.
Rob would go over and beyond to make sure we felt comfortable too. He took us to places he already knew just to see us enjoy them too. Sharing, spreading happiness.
Rob, you will be dearly missed. Our deepest sympathy to Lynda, Sam, Lydia and their families.

Mr Hulson was an inspiration for me, if it wasn’t for Rob things in my life would have been very different.

Mr Hulson gave me the confidence to play cricket outside of school and without his guidance and teaching I wouldn’t have found this passion, the sport has been a big part of my life for the last 13 years and highlights have included representing local district teams! Rob also ignited a passion for English and writing, he was a fantastic storyteller! I don’t believe my career will have been half as successful to date if I didn’t have that level of teaching at a young age to set me on the right path.

Mr.Hulson touched many lives and was and still is held in the highest regard. He was a unique teacher but much more than that, he was a great man!

Rest in peace Sir, you will never be forgotten.

I was extremely saddened to learn that Rob has passed away. I know he was very poorly, and I hope he is now at peace. Through lifelong friendship with Sam, I’ve known Rob all of my life. Rob was a wonderful, kind, laid back man , full of character and sense of humour that I always admired. I always enjoyed catching up with him and I will truly miss him. I can’t imagine how difficult it is for all of you at this time.

Growing up I always thought Sam and Lydia had such a cool dad! As well as many earlier childhood memories, as I grew older I always enjoyed talking with Rob , and always found him full of interesting conversation. Discussing guitars and Oasis with him when I was learning to play, and many many conversations / debates about football! More recently my fondest memories were our trip to Valencia and of course Sam and Yuvi’s wedding.

However my lasting memory of Rob will be of a chance meeting we had in Morrisons Nantwich on a Saturday morning, about a year ago. We bumped into each other in the aisle, and then spent around 45minutes avoiding the shopping and just catching up, like no time had passed since we last met, without a care in the world. This was typical, Rob always made everyone feel welcome and at ease, interested in others and never ever too busy to catch up.

    RIP Rob

I remember Rob as full of life, his love for his music, his football and above all else for his love of his family. Having known Rob since “college days” I have been flooded with memories of good times, and of the thought of a life well lived. The words and memories somehow don’t seem to either do justice to the good that Rob did in his life, nor do they soften the sense of loss from his passing. The only thing that helps is knowing that Rob wouldn’t want the grief to stop you all from living the life he would want you to have. To even have a drink for him, to sing a song for him, to even celebrate a Liverpool win for him and more than all of these to love each other as he loved you.

Remember “grief is the price we pay for love.” I forget who said “Live so that when your children think of fairness and integrity, they think of you” but they could have been thinking of Rob when they said it.

Lynda and family, we hope the love from all you friends helps in some way. Rob, God bless and rest in peace, thanks for the memories.

    Love Ian and Diane Millard

    Dear Rob,
Thank you for being a generous and kind friend to myself and to Alan over the last 20 years.
You and Lynda have influenced our lives deeply and made them richer in the process and I hope you understood that in the times we spent together.
I remember your love of travel and of France and the many holidays we shared as you introduced us to France and later Spain where Sam was working, and then Italy too! You were both happy also to indulge our love of Turkey and travel there with us and Dave Feenan. They were great times, nothing flashy but we would have lots of fun and you and Lynda would put together the most delicious meals -often accompanied by red and sometimes even brown, wine! You introduced us to your favourite music and would play your guitar for us into the wee small hours and make us laugh with your practical jokes and wry sense of humour. For example early one morning on one of the holidays you took a picture of Alan wearing my silk dressing gown to bring the washing in and then one of us both looking like drowned rats during one of the downpours. Candid camera type shots etc. which you then compiled into a ‘lovely’ Xmas calendar- for us and all our friends to enjoy! We loved it really.
I also know you were a talented teacher and I gather although you got really good results out of your pupils, you shared your sense of fun, music and guitar playing with them. I also gather that they appreciated your rewarding their hard work with a song and a joke at the end of term.
There are so many things you shared with us Rob, your flair and artistry and minimalistic style which was evident in your own home and garden and which you used in a practical way to help us renovate ours.
Your love of dogs, of nature and of the outdoors, of the Black Lion, other cosy inns and the occasional pint and also of walking- a love which you shared with Alan, often with Stan or later Charlie in tow.
You and Lynda welcomed us into your home and your life Rob. The most important lagacy you left us was in sharing your close family and your extended family with us. You have made us feel welcome and like part of your english and then also your bolivian family. Thank you for all that and much more Rob.
We will hold you and your generous spirit in our hearts and cherish Lynda and your loving family forever.

    Man dreams
    The spirit lives,
    Man is tethered
    Spirit is free
What spirit is man can be.

    RIP ROB.

We were very shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Rob after his relatively short battle with cancer. We are so sorry that we never saw more of him. Reading all the wonderful tributes he touched on the lives of so many, he will not be forgotten and ‘Will Never Walk Alone’.
If we had only made it to Cringoed as planned!
Rest in peace and God bless you all. Lynda we are here for you.

The Hulsons have been part of my life since before I can remember. Family friends next door but one. Listening to Rob potter round the garden, walking Stan and playing the guitar.
I will always remember getting him to dance with me at a wedding. I’m not sure who was more shocked, Lynda or him.
I will always remember him fondly.

Rob (or “Mr Hulson” as I knew him) was my teacher at St Martin’s Primary School. I had the pleasure of being taught by him for 2 years, from the ages of 9 to 11. I’m now 26 years old with a Masters degree, so needless to say I’ve had many teachers since then. But to this day, in all of my academic career, I can honestly say he was my favourite. Passionate, funny, creative and charismatic, Mr Hulson was definitely in a league of his own. I’ll never forget the first time we walked into his classroom and there he was, sitting back, playing his guitar, not a care in the world. Even then, something told me we were in for an interesting couple of years. Little did I know how much those two years would mean to me. He was the one who influenced and inspired my passion for creative writing and the pursuit of knowledge, as well as becoming the best version of myself. That inspiration stayed with me long after I had left primary school and has echoed throughout the rest of my life since. He would always push me at school, always believing I could be so much better and do so much better than I was doing. There were times that I disliked him for it initially, but it was never long before I realised he just wanted to bring out the best in me, and he always did. He believed in me. He believed in all of us, and would stop at nothing to help us all reach our potential. And I think I speak for all of his pupils when I say we’ll never be able to thank him enough. He truly had a massive impact on my life, and I’ll never forget him. He was my teacher, my mentor, and my friend. Rest easy, Rob. Save me a seat in the café upstairs and one day we’ll finally have that catch up we talked about having, I’m sure of it. In the meantime, I’m going to make you proud. I promise. Thank you for everything, Mr Hulson. All my love x

I am truly saddened to hear this news. Rob was my teacher in Years 5 & 6 during my time in St Martins Primary School in Runcorn. This would have been around 2004/2005. I then spent more time in the classroom with him in around 2010/11 when I was volunteering at St Martins in prep for my University course.

Lots of memories spring to mind ranging from him reading books like Paul Jennings Gizmo when I was younger to the teaching advice he gave me during my time volunteering when I was in Sixth Form. I also remember how chuffed he was when Liverpool won on penalties in Istanbul. The next day he had to tell us all in class to stop talking about it as we were so excited as kids!

My deepest condolences go out to all of Rob’s family. The memories will always hold a special place in my heart.

    Rest In Peace

I’m shocked and saddened by your loss, and my prayers go out to your family. I know how highly you used to speak of them to us in lessons, and how proud you were of them.
Thank you for everything g you ever did for me. You will be greatly missed by so many people.

    Dear Lynda, Sam and Lydia
Our thoughts are with you at this sad time. We will all miss Rob. We are in awe of the way you cared for and supported him and each other in the final weeks of his illness. We’re also thinking of Audrey and Anita who will have been devastated to lose their little brother.
It is heartwarming to read so many good things about Rob and how much he meant to others. He was an accomplished teacher, artistic, musical and a skilled craftsmen. He was good company, kind and welcoming. We were friends and neighbours for over 30 years. We’ll remember the parties, the holidays, the New Year’s day walks with all the kids.
Eastern Road won’t be the same without him, but we won’t forget. We’ll remember him with a smile. It’s the little every day things. Chatting with him out front while he was cleaning his car, Seeing him out on the fields at the back walking his dog. Impossible to forget that roguish grin and giggley laugh, full of boyish enthusiasm for things he’d enjoyed or projects he was planning.
Rob was a good old friend. We are so sad to have to say goodbye too soon, but so glad to have known him.

We met Rob through Lynda at college over forty years ago. Rob was fun with a good sense of humour and he was so easy to talk to. He was a man who was born to love others and he was a great family man. We met up a few years ago and it was as if we had never been apart. Lynda and Rob had this capacity to embrace others and make them feel at home with them.
Lynda, Sam, Lydia and all of the family, we are so sad for you all. It was a privilege to know Rob and you must feel so proud of all he has meant to those whose lives he has touched.

I first met Rob in the early 70’s atCrewe and Alsager College, however it was our move to Willaston in 1993 when we really became close friends.
I thoroughly enjoyed our regular banter when I called in whilst walking the dog and i was always presented with the best cup of coffee around.Typical blokes football dominated the chat and The Reds were very much flavour of the day.We both had a passion for France too of which both Rob and Linda had an incredible knowledge.Trish and I gained many valuable tips from their first hand travel experiences.
Rob was always a great source of inspiration, kind and softly spoken, interesting and understated an admirable quality indeed. He had around him a terrific family who loved him dearly and will miss him enormously. We must remember however that despite Rob leaving us far too early he left behind a rich legacy.Linda,Sam and Lydia can take comfort from such wonderful memories of a truly lovely human being.
Similarly I was so fortunate to spend quality time with Rob in the latter weeks.I will treasure those moments for the rest of my life.A privilege indeed!

Rob, I am so lucky that our paths crossed over 20 years ago. We first met as colleagues at a school in Warrington but very quickly became extremely good friends. In fact so good, that we both changed jobs and moved to teach at St. Martin’s School in Runcorn, where we worked alongside each other until your retirement. You were truly an inspirational and talented man that the children adored. Your writing, artistic and musical skills were shared with every child you taught and I was privileged to watch each child grow and develop in your care. We shared so many laughs, mainly from your wicked sense of humour and I enjoyed listening to your many stories-what a storyteller!!!!
I was so shocked and saddened to hear of your loss. My heartfelt condolences go to Lynda, Lydia and Sam at this sad sad time. But you have left us all with so many wonderful and precious memories and stories.
    I wish you peace Rob

I attended St. Martins from 1998-2005. We had the pleasure of Mr Hulson being our teacher from 2003-2005. Everyone I still speak to that I attended primary school with have also always spoke highly of Mr Hulson. He was one of our favourite teachers by far! He wasn’t just a teacher, he was devoted and passionate at what he done for work. Not a day went by without him playing guitar to us. He tough us about many things in life and one thing that will stick with me forever is our leaving assembly. We made our own version of Half the World Away by Oasis. The first line in the song being ‘I don’t want to leave this school, the teachers here are very cool’. That in itself speaks volumes of what he was like. I am truly devastated to hear about the loss of Robert Hulson and I am so sorry to his family.

All these condolences sum Robert up wonderfully and I am deeply grateful that it was possible today to participate virtually in his funeral. Although it was so sad and unbelievable to be saying goodbye, the service was beautiful and very fitting.

My lasting memories of him are as the mischievous little boy I first met in 1958 when he was leaping from chair to chair round the living room in Bowden Street. He was the much loved brother of my husband to be, Gordon, and they shared the same sense of fun and playfulness. I also remember his fascination with fire as a child, and later, when an open fire at his home was such a focus. When he decided to teach himself to play the guitar in his teens, he listened to his heroes diligently until he was able to play their riffs. Eventually he astonished everyone with his ability to play almost anything, in almost any position, including behind his back!

As Robert grew up he and Gordon found other things in common and would engage in long conversations about art, music and everything under the sun, challenging and being stimulated by each other’s ideas. From a personal point of view, as a fellow teacher, I found conversations with Robert about his teaching methods hugely inspiring and it was very obvious what wonderful gifts he brought to the profession.
I’ll miss Robert very much and I deeply treasure the memories I have of him.

Lynda, Sam and Lydia, thinking of you all with sorrow and much love, Helen

I had the pleasure of being taught by Mr Hulson during my time at St Martin’s 2004-2006. To say he was an unbelievable teacher would be an understatement, he was so much more! My thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends of Rob. Watching the service today and hearing about his passion for calligraphy brought back many memories about the talks we had over handwriting.
Seeing the liverpool scarf on display also reminded me of when we streamed the Super Cup in 2005 and hearing You’ll Never Walk Alone really was tough.
Mr Hulson was very passionate for everyone of his pupils, even in my journey in high school he would keep tabs on me through my younger brother still in St Martin’s at the time. I recall going to pick him up from school having gone through a stage of misbehaving and Rob invited me into the classroom where he gave me probably one of the most important talks I’ve ever had, from that day I remained on the straight and narrow as I went on to study my GCSE’s, A Levels and my degree.
This has been one of the hardest messages to write (even more than some of my degree assignments) there will never be enough words to describe how great of a man he really was.

    Rest in Peace Mr Hulson

Whilst we had not seen as much of him as we would have liked in recent years our memories of Rob will stay with us. Rob and Lynda were amongst the first to befriend us when we first arrived in England and Rob was one of the first to welcome Leo into Danebank FC which necessitated frequent bicycle trips to partake of a pint (or four) at the Red lion or the Swan in Wynbunbury. He was a key member in the first football trips that Leo organised to Germany and he was rightly recognised by the locals as a “Stimmungskanone.” His organisational skills were legendary. Who can forget 3 of us waiting all night in the Rifleman at Nantwich for a meeting that he had arranged but forgot to attend! Both the football and cricket teams were always relieved when Rob arrived, often with only minutes to spare before the start of the games. We remember with fondness the all-day fish meal at Le Gurp when he drove back to Montalivet claiming there was never anything on the roads in France at that time of the evening and anyway, he hadn’t drunk much wine. It was a real shame that he couldn’t make Leo’s 70th celebration 18 months ago but grandchildren come first and it probably kept the bar bill a bit lower.
No words can help when a loved one leaves us but it is comforting to know that he lives on fondly in our memory. Although we never got to know Sam and Lydia as they grew up, they had a dad they can be proud of and who was always the best company to be with.
