Sue Roberts
“Always loved, never forgotten and forever missed.”
Sadly on 3rd January at Leighton Hospital with her devoted family
by her side. Knowing she was loved and cared for Sue aged 72 years. The devoted wife of Colin,
cherished Mum of Jo and Step Mum of Lee and much loved Nana of Mia.
Born in Lyndon Grange in Crewe on 8th January 1950 Sue was one of
three girls born to her parents Freda and Dennis Cooper. With her
sisters Irene and Carol life would have busy and Freda and Dennis
would work hard to ensure that the girls had everything they needed to
thrive and have a carefree childhood.
Growing up, holidays were always taken in Abergele, where knitted
bathing costumes were the “in-vogue trend”. There were annual Guide
Camps and Irene remembers trips to Manchester to look at the shops
and there was always a visit to Lyons Tea Rooms.
A bright girl, having passed her 11 plus Sue attended the Girls Grammar
School and then in 1970 she began her Nurses training – to follow her
true vocation.
Colin and Sue met in The Royal Scot Public House. It was a contrived
meeting because Sue and her friend knew Colin drank there on a Friday,
and she was keen to meet him. They would marry in 1977 with the
wedding breakfast being held in Ming Sums Chinese restaurant – a very
popular venue back in the day and many said it was “the best wedding
breakfast ever”.
Sue’s family became complete with daughter Jo and step son Lee.
Being a wife and mother, running a home and working full time Sue had
to juggle many demands, but she did it gladly and together with Colin
they were a formidable team.
Following the arrival of granddaughter Mia, Sue and Colin took to their
new roles of grandparents with ease. This little girl was the apple of
Sues eye and she never missed an opportunity to spoil her – its what
Nana’s do – its part of the job description.
Time away from the demands of every day life were precious to Sue and
Colin – and they travelled extensively. Sue had always enjoyed
photography and painting and trips away fed her artistic skills, many of
the results adorning the walls of her home.
They had an innate love of Portugal and visited many, many times, the
Bellavista Hotel in Praia da Luz in the Algarve was their destination of
choice. The beautiful beaches, small towns and the rugged coastline
were all they needed to make their holidays perfect.
One time a holiday to Florida was anticipated with much excitement, but
it wasn’t without its landmark events. Sue was never one to get drunk so
whilst at the aptly named “Wine Cellar” she opted for Irish Coffee, and
became a little merry, shall we say. The first and only time she ever got
drunk, and she could honestly say it was through drinking coffee!
Sue spent decades working hard in the NHS focussing on mental health
care both at Leighton Hospital and co-ordinating care in the community.
Sue was an active member of the RCN regularly attending and speaking
at conferences across the country.
One of Sue’s most surprising day’s working at Leighton was when Colin
arrived to meet her following a cricket match. She was very perceptive
and after a quick glance at Colin she said “you’ve lost your teeth haven’t
you?” Colin’s reply was “no, they’re in my pocket”.
In 2004 both Sue and Colin retired from working life to spend more time
enjoying their hobbies of gardening and painting, whilst taking lots of
holidays, including some to their beloved Portugal.
Sue’s funeral will take place on Friday 20th January 2023 at
Crewe Crematorium Chapel at 1.45pm.
