Gordon John Cowin

The Lord Make His Face To Shine Upon You

The Lord Make His Face To Shine Upon You

Gordon John Cowin died peacefully aged 83 years old, as dawn broke, on Saturday 21st March 2020 following a short illness. Beloved husband of 57 years to Gillian, adored dad of Julie, loving father-in-law of Drew, wonderful Poppa of Joshua, Thomas, Amy and Matthew and older brother to Graham. Gordon will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him as a gentle, caring and dedicated man, who adored his family and loved nothing more than being surrounded by them. He will be missed by so many.

In these unprecedented times, a gathering to share memories and to celebrate Gordon’s life will come later, for now a private family funeral helps him on his final journey. Gordon’s legacy remains though, the love he gave and received helps us through the next few difficult weeks and months until we can gather together. From his birth in the back room at his family’s barbers in Prince Edwin Street in Liverpool on 31st July 1936, to his service in the Army as an Ambulance Driver (how proud he was when his youngest grandson followed in those footsteps), to his marriage to Gillian on 16th March 1963, the trauma of still-born Andrew’s birth on 5th August 1966, the delight of Julie’s birth on 21st July 1968 and the births of his grandchildren, family was the priority in his life. “There is nothing more important than family” he would say often. Even in hospital, his main concern was that of his wifey Gill, and now his family take on that priority until we all meet again. As we tend his beloved garden, thumb through his many books, look at the photos of happy holidays and family gatherings, raise a beer, Gordon’s memory will live on in our hearts.

Because Gordon lives on, as Martin Luther King Jr once said ‘Death is not a full-stop that ends the great sentence of life, but a comma that punctuates it to more lofty significance. Death is not a blind alley that leads the human race into a state of nothingness, but an open door which leads man into life eternal. Let this daring faith, this great invincible surmise, be your sustaining power during these trying days.’ This is the hope we hold onto as we say our final earthly good-byes to our beloved husband, dad and Poppa, that until we meet again, he’s safe in the arms of Jesus.

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Winnie-the-Poo

The original peacemaker (although you could stir it up, too!) I’ll treasure those rambling chats in the kitchen while Gill was having the cuppa you had taken up to her – and the top-up. You have a lot to answer for in my life in many ways, but thanks for my first guitar and all the laughs, Gordon! R.I.P.
