William David Winwood was fondly known as Dave, a beloved husband to the late
Christine, a devoted dad to Heather and Lyndsay, a dear father in law to Simon and
Kevin, a doting grandad to Alex and also to his furry grandsons Barney and then
Wilson; the rock on which their close loving family was built,
Dave was a much loved older brother to Jean, Paul and the Late Margaret, a brother
in law, Uncle to Tracey, Hayley, Rebecca and Josh on his side of the family and
friend to many over the years.
He was totally dependable, always there when needed. Dave was full of fun, fit and
active and extremely competitive even when playing table tennis with Chris, if he
thought she was winning, he mischievously started his powerful spins as he knew
she couldn’t return them.
Dave was incredibly sharp witted, with a dry sense of humour and would often
commentate on TV programmes, Goggle Box certainly missed a trick there! He was
an intelligent man and outside of his family circle or close friends, it wasn’t easy to
get to know him; getting on with him was entirely dependent on what subjects were
being discussed as to whether he joined in or not. Dave was Mr Perfect, well in his
eyes at least! And his opinion he was always right – always saying “quite correct”
when someone said something he agreed with.
He was stubborn, independent, strong minded and equally strong willed, extremely
hard working, kind and generous and his mission in life was to provide for his family.
He never failed to put their needs before his and he would rather treat them to nice
things before spending money on himself.
But then again, he was incredibly astute, frugal or in laymen’s terms shrewd with the
coffers! He had an obsession with money or rather saving it! known as the “human
smart meter”, he could certainly give Martin Lewis a run for his money! He kept a
torch on the floor ready to read the meters and recorded his weekly electricity usage
and KWPH used each week even taking the reading the morning he went into
hospital! And far better at it than U Switch, he changed supplier more times than he
used the term, “quite right!” to save a few pounds.
He was savvy with bank accounts knew all the little tricks to get money back! Hardly
worth the Hassle to anyone else! And he was the same parking his car! He parked
in “the secret free car parking space” as he never agreed with pay and display or
paying for the privilege of parking on someone else’s land and would rather get three
buses to make full use of his bus pass and take three hours to get to his destination
rather than pay to park!
He knew the prices of Petrol across the area and probably the whole county and
would drive that extra mile literally to save a few pence per litre, running on vapours
until he found a suitable price.
He also knew all the prices of essential groceries in all supermarkets and would visit
two or three to find a saving but he was incredibly generous with his family.

Welcomed into the world on 29 th March 1948, Dave was the eldest of 4 children born
to Bill & Nancy Winwood. He attended Broad St Infant & Junior School and Ludford
Street Secondary leaving school with CSE’s, excelling at Math’s he was always top
in every maths test or exam.
Dave commenced his Apprenticeship with Breeden & Middleton and he worked for
Charlesworth TV company as a television engineer until 1985. When technology
advanced, TV engineers were no longer needed so he worked at Rolls Royce until
1991 and stayed there until 1991, then undertook other roles before retiring in 2013
as a Warehouse Operative at 20:20 logistics.
He and Chris met around 1966 whilst playing table tennis at a local youth club. They
were engaged for two years and exchanged their lasting vows on 6 th September
1969 initially living in Earle Street before moving to their forever home in Remer
Street in 1972 and were blessed with their two daughters.
He always looked forward to family get togethers, meals out and BBQ’s and
extended family used to join in on days out at local picnic areas, particularly on bank
holidays playing rounders and cricket; Men and boys against the women and girls
and the males always seemed to win.
Dave had many hobbies and developed a keen interest in sport from an early age
and although he liked watching any type of sport, he enjoyed playing football in his
younger days and progressed to many other ball games like snooker and squash
and won many of his games.
He also played badminton with Chris and dear friends Eileen and the late Ray and
his skill won him the intercompany badminton title at Rolls Royce yet many of the
competitors were convinced, they would easily win as Dave had many more years
on the clock! Old enough to be a dad to some of them, but to their amazement he
won the whole competition.
He was also good at darts and dominoes and pool, a valuable member of the local
league, and played for quite a few teams. He and his pool partner Albert Dean had
more transfers than Lineker and Shearer and Dave was so good, he even became a
fully qualified pool referee.
He regularly met up with his mates Alan and Bob at the Liberal Club, a central part of
their social life when Kath and Alan, late auntie and uncle, were the licensees hence
lots of family gatherings held there.
Dave and Heather enjoyed playing dominoes at home, and spent many Saturday
nights playing chipping, nothing too complicated – as 5’s and 3 could be a little tricky
with Heather’s maths skills! But they were both very competitive, playing for Mars
Bars, the usual currency when they were having bets on anything ranging from Man
Utd results to the results in her exams or even when they had swimming races.
Heather hardly ever won any Mars Bars!

Dave enjoyed watching football in the olden days and took Heather and Lyndsay to
several matches to watch their beloved Manchester United, normally covering their
ears to block out the swearing!
And he was well known around Crewe riding his tandem. Those who sat at the back
seldom peddled – Lyndsay being the main culprit and let poor Dave do all the hard
work!
His biggest triumph in life was his only grandson being born in April 2007, and his
prize was Alex, his much loved, cherished grandson who he was incredibly proud of
and who often called his grandad “Dave!”. Dave played an active part in Alex’s life,
taking him to school, going for day’s out in the school holidays and of course as I
said in my welcome, Dave also had another grandchild of the furry kind – first Barney
followed by Wilson and all three of them competed for title of number one
Grandchild!
Family holidays were always very important, but David refused to fly so they
normally stayed within the UK at places like Scarborough, Skegness, Llandudno and
Pwllheli in hotels or Butlins Holiday Camps and he would always participate in all the
competitions and very often won.
A fun loving, amazing husband, dad and grandad; forever loved and missed.

May he rest in peace.
